How to Apply to Our Program

*Application instructions for MLS Certificate, BS Degree, and MMLS Degree only.

All students interested in applying to the Medical Laboratory Sciences Program at the University of Minnesota are strongly encouraged to review the following materials before beginning the MLS Application. If you would like more information about the program prior to applying, please complete an Inquiry Form to be contacted by a member of our admissions team.

MLS Application:

The priority admissions deadline for all applicants is Feb. 4, 2023. MMLS applications complete after this deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.

The final admissions deadlines are as follows:

  • MMLS applicants: as program fills or April 19, 2023, whichever comes first
  • Year 4/Certificate: April 19, 2023
  • Year 3: July 1, 2023

All applicants must complete and submit the MLS application through AHCAS (Allied Health Centralized Application Service). For questions, please refer to the AHCAS Applicant Help Center

The UMTC MLS application does NOT require recommendations.  Click on the box indicating "I am not adding any evaluations" on the Recommendations page of the AHCAS application.

Application Checklist

Before beginning your application, please refer to our Requirements for Entry webpage for assistance and admissions requirements.

Review Eligibility for Admission

  • Review all Academic Requirements: be sure that you are not missing any prerequisite, foundational, or liberal education coursework
  • Review all Non-Academic Requirements: review and make sure that you are or will be able to meet all of the Non-Academic requirements of the MLS program.

International Applicants: The Professional Master's Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MMLS) has been approved to accept international students on an F1 visa. Applicants with other visa types should contact [email protected] for further information on admission eligibility.

Apply to the University of Minnesota OR Submit a Change of College Form

  • U of M students (past and present): If you have ever been enrolled as a degree seeking student at any of the University of Minnesota campuses you are required to login, complete and submit a Change of College form after accepting admission into the MLS program. If you have been away from the University system for an extended period of time, contact One Stop to get your account updated and accessible.
  • UMR Bachelor of Science in Health Science students (BSHS Students): If you are currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Health Science program at the University of Minnesota Rochester, you are required to complete and submit a Change of College form after accepting admission into the MLS program.
  • MMLS Applicants: If you are applying for the MMLS program, you do not need to apply to the University of Minnesota. You apply only through the MLS application via AHCAS located on this webpage. All official transcripts must be uploaded directly to AHCAS. You must have a bachelor's degree by the end of the Spring semester prior to beginning the MMLS curriculum. 
  • Affiliate students (St. Cloud State University (SCSU), Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU), University of River Falls (UWRF)): If you are currently enrolled at SCSU, MSU or UWRF, you are required to submit all official transcripts directly to AHCAS. To qualify as an affiliate student you must not graduate from your home institution before completing the MLS curriculum.
  • Non-U of M students: If you have never been enrolled as a degree seeking student at any of the University of Minnesota campuses and are seeking a bachelor's degree, you are required to submit an Undergraduate Transfer Student Application with our general Admissions Office. Applications to the MLS program will not be processed until after the Undergraduate Transfer Student Application has been submitted and processed.
  • International students:
    • International applicants must submit score(s) from one of the following tests with the Undergraduate Transfer Student Application:
      • TOEFL - Test of English as Foreign Language (preferred)
        • Internet Based - Total Score: 95
        • Paper Based - Total Score: 586
      • MELAB - Michigan English Language Assessment Battery
        • Final Score: 85
    • International applicants MUST submit a World Education Services (WES) evaluation of all coursework taken outside of a U.S. Institution. Evaluations must be sent directly to AHCAS.

Obtain and Mail Official Transcripts

All applicants must submit official transcripts directly to AHCASFor additional questions regarding AHCAS transcript entry, please visit the AHCAS Transcript Entry webpage.

Complete and Submit the MLS Application

  • Complete and submit your MLS application and payment of $50 through AHCAS.
