Course Sequence

Year One

The first year of study aims to build a firm foundation in the study of activity and occupation; society, community, family and environmental influences on human occupation; and foundations of occupational therapy practice. As students move into second semester, they begin public and professional engagement course series when students participate within communities, developing understanding and skills of engagement. Three Level I fieldwork experiences occur in the first year, providing guided practice under the supervision of an occupational therapist. This is the beginning of a shift from conceptual coursework to increased emphasis on practice.

Year Two

Year two of the curriculum continues the application of concepts to practice. Students apply theory to increasingly complex areas of practice in a broad range of contexts including work and group settings. Students spend additional time engaged in Level I fieldwork and continue their public and professional engagement course series where they participate in communities. Six months of year two is devoted to Level II fieldwork where students practice the role of occupational therapist under the direct supervision of an occupational therapist. All students attend Level II fieldwork in both a traditional medical setting and in a broad range of community settings, including urban and non-urban areas. Students should expect to travel across the state of Minnesota for at least one of their Level II fieldwork experiences. Level II fieldwork may be scheduled anytime within the second year depending upon site availability and match with the fieldwork model. All Level II fieldwork must be completed within 24 months following the completion of the didactic portion of the curriculum.
